Breaking: Former EFCC Boss Passes On

Ibrahim Lamorde, the former chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away in Egypt at the age of 61. Lamorde, who served as the EFCC’s third executive chairman from 2011 to 2015, died while seeking medical treatment in Egypt, according to a close associate.

Born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State, Lamorde joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1986 and rose through the ranks to become a Deputy Inspector General of Police before retiring in 2021. During his tenure with the police, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the EFCC in 2003, serving as the commission’s pioneer Director of Operations.

Lamorde’s stint as EFCC chairman began in 2011 when he was appointed in an acting capacity following the removal of his predecessor, Farida Waziri, by then-President Goodluck Jonathan. He was later confirmed as the substantive chairman by the Senate on February 15, 2012, a position he held until November 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu.

Throughout his career, Lamorde was known for his unwavering commitment to the fight against corruption in Nigeria. During his time as EFCC chairman, the commission achieved several high-profile convictions and recovered billions of naira in stolen assets. Lamorde’s passing is a significant loss for the anti-corruption movement in Nigeria, and he will be remembered as a dedicated public servant who played a crucial role in the country’s efforts to combat financial crimes and graft.
