Stolen life:24Years of Wrongful incaceration.
Lukman Adeyemi, a 50-year-old bricklayer, spent an unimaginable 24 years of his life wrongfully imprisoned. At just 26 years old, he was ensnared in a horrific nightmare that would haunt him for over two decades.
In August 2000, Lukman’s friend Ismaila Lasisi was summoned to the police station. Wanting to support his friend, Lukman accompanied him, only to be arrested and detained alongside Ismaila. Lukman pleaded his innocence, but his cries for justice fell on deaf ears. He was mercilessly tortured, coming dangerously close to death, all for a crime he knew nothing about.
Lukman and Ismaila were charged and sentenced to death in 2009 for the murder of a woman they had no connection to. Lukman’s heart must have sunk as he watched his appeals fail, one by one, up to the Supreme Court. Abandoned by the system he had trusted, Lukman spent 15 agonizing years on death row, trapped in a living hell.
“I felt abandoned by truth itself,” Lukman lamented. “I spent 24 years behind bars like 24 hours, a sleepless night that lasted for two decades.” The weight of this injustice must have been crushing, as Lukman questioned how he could have paid for someone else’s sin.
Finally, in June 2023, a glimmer of hope emerged. A correctional officer introduced Lukman’s case to a pastor, who then connected him with the Centre for Justice Mercy and Reconciliation. This organization listened to Lukman’s story, reviewed the case documents, and uncovered the truth – the real perpetrators had confessed, exonerating Lukman and Ismaila.
On June 14, 2024, Lukman finally tasted freedom after 24 long years. “Light shone upon me, rain fell on my head for the first time and I saw the moon for the first time,” he expressed with profound gratitude. The organization’s belief in his innocence had reignited his hope, guiding him towards redemption.
Lukman’s story is a heartbreaking testament to the flaws in our justice system. His unimaginable suffering serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for reform, to ensure no innocent soul is ever robbed of their freedom and rightful place in society.
